The Real Benefits of Matcha
I’ve read a lot of posts about matcha, it’s benefits and why everyone seems to sum it up with one word: magical.
Believe it or not, all of that wasn’t enough to get me to try the green Japanese powder, let alone even look for it when I was in Whole Foods multiple times per week.
I’ll be honest.
I’m not sure exactly what it was that made me decide to purchase my first package of matcha. Maybe it was that little voice in my head that said, “this is really going to be good for you.” Perhaps it was the variety of treats you can make with matcha that got my sweet tooth excited. Or maybe it was all the posts I’ve read about it! It really didn’t matter. The main thing is that I did buy it and I am now one of the people bloggggggggging about how truly magical matcha is!
The definition of Matcha, in case you didn’t know (and I’ll admit, I didn’t!) literally means ground tea. More specifically, it’s a super fine green powder made out of Japanese green tea leaves that are grown in the shade. Only the leaves (no stems) are ground into the powder. It’s known for bringing a sense of peace and calm particularly when drank as tea.
But there are multiple reasons why it’s often referred to as magical:
- boosts energy
- strengthens immune system
- restores clarity in thinking
- enhances focus
- increases metabolism
- high in antioxidants
- helps w/cholesterol
- provides “inner calm”
- versatility (you can take it as tea, add it to smoothies, or include in a favourite baking recipe)
If you’re ready to do your body a great favour by including matcha into your daily diet, make sure the matcha you buy is 100% organic (this may mean you spend a bit more, but it’s the only way you’ll get the true benefits) and also, if you have any health issues, you may want to check in with your health care provider first.
At the moment I prefer this brand, but there are lots out there. You’ll find some great options at your local organic market too.
