Don’t Quit: Why Challenging Yourself is Good For You

When all you want to do is give up, don’t quit. Challenging yourself is good for you.

Recently, I was training to be a docent at a local art museum. The course was incredible. The content completely energising, but there were so many moments during the training that I wanted to quit. Even though I absolutely loved what I was learning, all the new information I was taking in left me feeling totally overwhelmed. I seriously considering throwing in the towel.

When I mentioned this to my daughter, she said, “But you love this, why would you think about quitting?” I explained to her my reasons, and in doing so the real truth was brought to light – I didn’t think I could handle the course load along with my other responsibilities. I could see the look on my daughter’s face, disappointment. Like a peaceful warrior, I knew I had to power through and complete the training if not for me, for her.

And I’m SOOO glad I did. I completed the docent training and passed the review with flying colours!

HERE’S THE THING

We all get overwhelmed. And there will be times when you want to quit.

But those are the defining moments that separate people – those who will power through when life gets complicated and those who will give up.

THE TRUTH

We are wired to push ourselves to try new things. Sure, it may be uncomfortable. Yes, it may bring up a whole lot of negative self-talk, but the experience is meant to test our limits, to go beyond what we think we are capable of achieving.

The rewards are massive – an immediate surge of increased confidence and determination; a sense of overall wellbeing that is instantly balanced; improved clarity, and a wave of feeling incredibly proud of yourself that no price can match.

When it’s uncomfortable (it will be at times) and you’re feeling overwhelmed, revise your strategy to achieve:

  • Take a break for a few weeks, go back to it refreshed
  • Revise your schedule to accommodate time for your goal
  • When you don’t feel like it, do it anyway
  • Ask for help

But don’t quit.

Challenging yourself to achieve something that is important to you is probably one of the best things you can do for yourself.

Yes, YOU’VE GOT TO CARE.

You’ll know how much a goal means to you if it’s one that’s hard to walk away from or if it’s something you can’t stop thinking about. That’s a clear sign you are emotionally invested in your goal. All the more reason to never give up.

A dose of tough love –

There are many people who will quit, don’t be one of them.

Care about yourself. Care about your goals. Care about your life.

You can accomplish great things!
